STORMTRACK 3: Tropical Storm Watch issued for coastal counties
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As of this morning, a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, and Onslow Counties until further notice.
Tropical Storm Arthur is located near the Florida coast and about 350 miles south of Myrtle Beach. The system will turn northward on Wednesday, and accelerate to the northeast by Thursday. At this point, a direct landfall in southeastern North Carolina is not likely. However, the center of circulation will pass offshore very close to our area, bringing tropical storm-force conditions.
The outer rain bands will begin to affect the WWAY viewing area early Thursday morning. The center of Arthur will make its closest approach late Thursday evening. Heavy rains and winds over 45 mph are likely, with a few gusts over 60 mph. Heavy showers/gusty winds will continue through early Friday morning, but conditions should rapidly improve by late Friday evening as the storm pushes toward the Outer Banks. Arthur could gain hurricane status as it approaches Cape Hatteras.
A typical summertime pattern will return on Saturday and Sunday as Arthur accelerates out to sea.
