Cape Fear Roller Girls prepare for battle this Saturday

Body

This is not your grandmother’s roller derby, but that is okay, it is still entertaining and competitive.

“This is our first bout, down at the Schwartz Center downtown,” said Kelsey “Psychodelic” Lingerfelt of the Cape Fear Roller Girls. “We’re really excited. We have been working a long time to get this to happen. We are pretty stoked about it.”

Modern day roller derby is predominantly female. There is a bit of satirical punk mixed in with pure athleticism.

In roller derby there are “jammers”; you can also find tripping and illegal blocking, but you probably won’t see a fight. “When most people think about derby they think about the banked tracks. A lot of it in the past was staged. It was the WWF of the derby world,” Kate “Truck Nuts” Goodnight said. “We’re sort of like the Ultimate Fighting Challenge, but we have more rules and less cage.”

Fight or not, roller derby is physical, especially the bouts. Practice can be rugged as well. Caroline “Dixie Diesel” Cooley said, “This is our first game of the season, we have a lot of good & new girls. It should be an exciting game.” This sport is more than just power though; it takes strategy and skill to come out with a victory.

Currently there are over a hundred roller derby leagues across the nation. These girls hope to see you on Saturday! “These are real hits. This is real athletes. It’s like a good game of rugby,” described Renee “Crash Nasty” Newton.

Tickets are ten dollars in advance at Doublewide Skate & Surf Shop on Front Street, as well as Gravity Records on Kerr Avenue. Otherwise, it is 12 dollars at the door Saturday night at the Schwartz Center.
