Laney High students back to a cleaner school

Laney High School students are headed back to class Monday after some major spring cleaning during their spring break.

A health department inspection found a long list of problems in the school. There were also four internal inspections by the school’s maintenance department.

The health department gave Laney a score of 70.5, citing sanitation problems in the bathroom, floors and walls and even finding roaches. Many of the problems were repeat violations.

Laney’s usual custodial staff of twelve recently dropped to nine. They are responsible for cleaning ten buildings with 90 classrooms. Laney High’s assistant principal Gene Rivenbark said, “If you are in a situation where you don’t have the number of custodians to do a thorough job on a regular basis, things tend to build up.”

“We want to have a clean facility,” said New Hanover County Schools Assistant Superintendent of Operations Bill Hance. “We have certain standards and we are trying to maintain those standards. If we need to do something of this nature to do that then we will.”

While students were on spring break last week, more than 40 custodians from the county worked on the clean-up.
