Controversy over child with nut allergy
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With only one month left until the start of a new school year, one Wilmington family is left with a difficult decision.
Isabella Billings, 5, has a severe nut allergy. She can die if she comes in contact with or eats peanuts. She’s going to Alderman Elementary School.
Her parents think it’s important for her to be transferred to Winter Park Elementary, which is much closer to home. “We can see it from our street. When things happen like they have happened in the past, and our child in endangered, we are able to be there.” Her father, Jonathon Billings, said. “We have had her in situations where she is around professional medical staff and our ability to be there is what has made the difference.”
The school board has denied their requests to reassign Isabella. The family plans to appeal the decision. As a last resort, the family may homeschool their daughter next year.
