WPD increasing patrols after recent rash of car break-ins around Greenfield Lake
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police say several break-ins in the same area around Greenfield Lake means more police patrols there, along with warnings on how people who park there can avoid being the next target.
Police say several runners who parked their cars near the lake at about 7 a.m. yesterday reported that purses, wallets and money went missing in the time they exercised and got back to their cars. Officers say someone smashed out the windows to the cars, taking items from inside, all before the runners returned to leave in less than an hour.
While officers were taking reports at the scene, they say one of the victims learned that her stolen her card had already been used at area gas stations. This comes after several more reports of cars being broken into around the lake over the weekend.
Because of the recent rash of break-ins there, police are asking anyone who parks their car in the area to hide any valuable items inside, out of plain sight. Officers are also encouraging community members to be sure to lock their cars. Police say they are increasing patrols in and around the lake.
