Five highlights on NC child health in new report

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — According to a new report, children in North Carolina are healthier and better at math and reading than they were nearly a decade ago.

The Kids Count report is created by the Annie E. Casey foundation, a philanthropy and research organization based in Baltimore.

But the report says the state has more children in poverty than it did in 2005. More than a quarter of the state’s children are impoverished, though the national average of impoverished children also increased, from 19 percent to 23 percent.

North Carolina ranked 34th in the nation for overall child well-being, and 38th for economic well-being.
