NC Senate approves county sales tax changes

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The North Carolina Senate has approved a bill changing how counties impose sales taxes beyond what the state collects.

The Senate voted Thursday to limit nearly all of the state’s 100 counties to a local sales- and use-tax of 2.5 percent, including large urban counties that are currently allowed to raise the sales tax to 2.75 percent.

Consumers in more than 70 counties currently pay a combined state and local sales tax of 6.75 percent. Other counties have slightly higher rates.

Lawmakers rejected an attempt that would have increased the sales tax limit by 2.75 percent.

The bill now goes to the House.
