Two charged in fatal attack on UNC professor

CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — A professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has died after an attack near campus, and two people have been charged.

According to police, 59-year-old Feng Liu was found unresponsive Wednesday. Authorities say Liu suffered serious head wounds and was taken to UNC Hospitals. He died Thursday morning.

A Chapel Hill police spokesman said a passerby saw the incident and called police.

A news release says 23-year-old Derick Davis II of Durham and 27-year-old Troy Arrington Jr. of Chapel Hill are charged in connection with the attack. The two were scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, and police say more charges are pending after Liu’s death.

It’s not known if either man has an attorney.

Liu was a research professor in UNC’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
