Legislature appears intent on protecting charter schools from sharing how they spend tax dollars

The N.C. House of Representatives today passed a charter school bill that includes a provision to shield individual employee salaries from the public.

The bill, which was sent to a conference committee for further revisions, was approved 62-36.

The latest version of Senate Bill 793 exempts charter schools from the law that requires traditional public schools to release certain employee information, including individual salaries. Charter schools operate on public tax dollars just as traditional public schools do.

Gov. Pat McCrory said earlier this month that he would "veto any attempt to hide the names of charter school employees from the public record."

"It's indefensible," McCrory said, and it's counter to his administration's push for transparency.
