Laurean back in US to face murder charge

Federal officials say a Marine charged with killing a pregnant colleague in North Carolina has been extradited to the U.S. after fleeing to Mexico.

FBI spokeswoman Amy Thoreson said 22-year-old Cpl. Cesar Laurean arrived in the U.S. on Friday to face murder charges in the death of 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach of Vandalia, Ohio. Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson said he expected
Laurean to arrive at the local jail Friday night. He said Laurean’s first court appearance would be Monday.

Defense attorney Dick McNeil said he hasn’t been contracted by federal officials.

Laurean was charged with first-degree murder in January 2008, after Lauterbach’s charred remains were found buried in his backyard in Jacksonville. She had been eight months pregnant.

The two worked together at nearby Camp Lejeune.

WWAY has learned Laurean is flying on a commercial airliner back to this area. It’s not clear which airport he’s flying into, or which airline he’s flying on.
