Local Hokies remember Va Tech massacre at Thursday vigil

It’s been two years since a gunman went on a deadly rampage at Virginia Tech killing 32 people before killing himself.

Hokies everywhere gathered in remembrance Thursday, including the local alumni chapter, which held a candlelight vigil.

Two years after their alma mater was the scene of one of the most deadly massacre’s in US history, the Coastal Carolina Hokies came together Thursday night.

“Instead of remembering by ourselves, we thought it would be really important to get together as a group and take a moment out of our day and just be together during a difficult time,” said alumna Michelle Bliss.

“Coming out here tonight sort of helps as part of the healing process,” added Jim Floyd.

For those who were on campus that day, the memories are vivid.

“I was a freshman living in West Ambler Johnston where the two first shootings were,” said Chris Olsen. “It went from 22, and then a buddy of mine in a dorm over said 32, and I was like, that can’t be.” Olsen is in Wilmington doing an internship. He said the shootings have brought the campus together and people there are closer than ever.

This day will never be the same for anyone with Virginia Tech roots. Some, more than others. “April 16th is no longer my birthday, but it’s the day that I remember those that passed and those that could have had a future,” said Kristopher Ludacer.
