Ocean Isle Beach Mayor Debbie Smith has 50 years of memories of living on this island.

She and her family moved to Ocean Isle Beach six months after Hurricane Hazel hit. “We were the only four people that lived here permanently year round,” Smith said.

It’s hard to imagine this town with only four residents. As Ocean Isle Beach celebrates its golden anniversary this year, 500 people make up the town’s year-round population. That number jumps to as much as 25,000 in the summer.

Among the changes to the town known as the gem of the Brunswick islands was the museum of Coastal Carolina, which was founded by Stuart and Louise Ingram and opened in 1991.

“Just driving by the building on the outside you might not realize what’s on the inside and I think most people are surprised when they come and they see the exhibits and how much information there is about the environment of ocean isle beach,” said Scott Kucera of the Ocean Isle Museum Foundation.

The museum is the only natural history museum on a barrier island in the Carolinas. It offers exhibits on everything from seashells to sea turtles to the green swamp… and much more.

The touch tank is very popular with the kids and they also enjoy walking through one of the largest dry aquariums in the southeast.
