FIRST ON 3: Judge sets aside former cop’s prostitution with teen conviction
BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County jury has convicted a former Northwest Police officer for two crimes, but the conviction on one count may not stand in the long run.
Jurors found Michael Hayes guilty of participating in prostitution of a minor and filing a false police report. Minutes after the jury’s decision was announced, though, the judge set aside the verdict on the prostitution charge ruling prosecutors never established that the victim was a minor at the time of the crime. The DA plans to ask the NC Court of Appeals to overturn that ruling.
The judge sentenced Hayes to 45 days in prison and 12 months probation. He must also pay court costs and a $500 fine.
Hayes did not want to comment as he left court.
