Spring Lake man convicted in toddler’s death
FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — A jury has convicted a Cumberland County man of first-degree murder in the beating death of his 16-month old son two years ago.
The sheriff’s office says 31-year old Evans Aine II of Spring Lake also was convicted Monday of felony child abuse and sentenced to life without parole.
Aine was accused of beating Kaiden Demus with a belt and his fists, causing the boy to suffer blunt force trauma to the head and body. Kaiden died on June 11, 2012.
Aine told investigators that Kaiden fell on a sidewalk in front of their home, then claimed to have taken Kaiden into the house and placed him in a bathtub to clean him.
A report from the State Medical Examiner’s Office showed the child had been beaten to death.
