Williston getting a makeover

Millions of dollars are being poured into the former Williston Junior High School, which will soon re-open to guide students to a brighter future.

The original junior high was built back in 1953. At the time, it was the only place where African-American students in Wilmington could get an education.

That’s why preserving this landmark is vital to so many former students.

“Going by the school everyday, I just like to pass by and look at it. It brings back a lot of memories,” said Ron McFadden, a former Williston student.

Project manager Eddie Anderson said, “We’ve done a lot of things to preserve the history but also take the building back to its original look.”

This $ 9.9 million renovation project was made possible by a 2005 bond referendum. Once complete, Williston will serve fourth and fifth graders from Gregory Elementary School.

The facility will be brought up to 21st century with the best in modern day technology. Renovating Williston is necessary to handle the growth at Gregory Elementary School, which is rapidly reaching capacity.
