Masonboro Island saw fewer boats Labor Day weekend
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY)– Masonboro Island saw fewer boats than normal for a holiday weekend.
Residents say it was a very quiet labor day weekend on the water despite the nice weather.
“Back here there would be boats filled up and the sides would be filled,” John Shauvin said.
He has been boating here for more than 20 years, but he says this holiday seems a bit unusual.
“Noon on a holiday weekend and there is nobody out here,” John said.
He says the water has been a lot calmer all weekend.
“I was out there Friday, Saturday and today,” John said. “It’s been busier. It’s definitely been busier.”
Busier is what John’s son Luke says he likes.
“Not so much this holiday when everything is slow,” Luke said. “There’s a lot more people usually.”
John and Luke’s observations are pretty spot on. The Wrightsville Beach Coast Guard station says they had just average boat traffic for a Monday and slow traffic for a holiday with no incident reports.
“I suppose tourists are off peak, off season, back to work,” John said.
As tourists go back to work, John says the fishermen will come back.
“The fishing season starts in September and October,” he said. “We’ll have a full boat ramp again but it will be a different kind of person.”
It’s a difference John welcomes just as long as he can continue to boat.
“I like to fish, boat, play in the water and bring friends and family out,” John said.
