FIRST ON 3: Facebook group aims to help traffic-weary drivers in Leland
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Drivers on US 17/74/76 in Brunswick County expect backups now, and they might have to expect them for a while.
Work to widen the causeway won’t be done for more than two years, so a Leland woman says she is trying to help by keeping fellow drivers informed.
After a multi-car accident on the highway last month kept many drivers waiting in traffic for hours, Nikki New decided something needed to be done about the problem, so she created a Facebook page called Leland NC Traffic Reports, where drivers can warn each other about road conditions.
“In just eight days, we have 800 people now in the group, so it grows quickly, and first thing in the morning, it’s very active, everybody is saying what’s going on and posting their pictures, so it really took off pretty quick,” New said.
She says it only takes one car to cause hours of traffic, so she wanted to make sure drivers could communicate when this happens.
Coming up tonight on WWAY NewsChannel 3 at 6, find out what Leland Police are doing to keep traffic moving smoothly and safely.
