NC checks August joblessness, US conditions better

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A new snapshot of North Carolina’s most-watched economic indicator is being revealed.

The state Commerce Department on Friday releases data on the state unemployment rate in August.

North Carolina’s jobless rate has been flat for three months and at 6.5 percent in July was slightly higher than the national average.

The combination of those with jobs or looking for work in North Carolina fell in July. That’s a trend that has been underway for years and a sign raising questions about whether hiring is improving since workers who fall off unemployment rolls despite lacking jobs are no longer counted.

The national unemployment rate dropped in August to 6.2 percent, but only because some of those out of work gave up looking.
