NC Rice Festival held in Belville this weekend
BELVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Belville held the North Carolina Rice Festival in celebration of the town, but also for the historical aspect of the area.
During the late 1700 and 1800, rice was the main crop in the state of North Carolina exporting tons overseas.
Belville was named after the rice plantation, Belville plantation, that was located where the river walk is at now.
The festival had live music, many food vendors, and even a rice cooking contest.
Mayor Allen explained, “What we are trying to do is to draw attention to the town, draw attention to the historical side of it, show people what went on in this region, and how the Carolinas got started.”
The mayor also said the river walk would be extending a dock out from the park along with adding a classroom so public schools can use the facility for education. Ground breaking for this project is planned to be on October 4th.
Another idea being discussed for the park is a water taxi service transporting folks from downtown Wilmington area to the river walk dock in Belville.
