NC official: Japanese trip will pay dividends

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s top economic development official says the state is aggressively trying to land a foreign automaker.

As part of the plan, Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker visited Japan last week where she met with business interests.

Decker did not disclose details Monday of the meetings, but says she feels good about the state’s chances for a plant that would employ up to 5,000 people.

Decker says the state is currently in multiple conversations with auto makers in Asia and Europe.

She says automakers have told her they plan to build new plants in the United States within the next three to five years because of the rebounding economy.

The state has assembled three potential sites – each with about 1,200 acres – for a large manufacturer.
