Chief Evangelous leaving Wilmington?

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous was in Savannah, Ga., Wednesday interviewing for the job of top cop there. Evangelous is one of three contenders for the position. He told reporters in Savannah being an outsider was beneficial.

“What I’ve found is coming in with a fresh set of eyes, with no agendas, with you know, no baggage, that a lot of times it’s just easier to really get things done and meet with people and understand where there concerns are from,” said Chief Evangelous.

His interview consisted of meetings with different panels of community and city leaders. The chief, who makes $151,000 a year, would be making a maximum of $145,000 in Savannah.

The chief would not say whether he’d be willing to work for less.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said the city is not looking for Evangelous to leave.

“When the chief called me and told me he was a finalist, I congratulated him,” said Saffo, adding they have been very satisfied with the chief’s performance. “If, for one reason or another, he does not get the job, I would want him to continue on as our chief.”

Saffo adds though, they are also not making an effort to encourage the chief to stay.

Evangelous faced tough questions in Savannah. That city has seen protests recently after an armed black man was killed by a white police officer.

“In policing after Ferguson,” said Evangelous, “We have to get out in the community. We have to get out in front of these things. We have to be as transparent as possible and we have to push information out.”

If Evangelous is selected, finding a new chief will be a new process for the Wilmington City Council.

Only two members, Saffo and Padgett, were on council when he was hired 10 years ago.
