Wilmington celebrates 275th anniversary

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It has been 275 years since Wilmington was founded and a lot has changed over those years, but the love that people have for Wilmington has not.

“Happy birthday and happy anniversary Wilmington North Carolina,” says resident Paul Lawler.

From mossy trees to sandy beaches, Wilmington is stronger than ever even after 275 years.

Stephanie Sosinski, Wilmington resident, says, “It’s been nice to see it grow and expand.”

Incorporated back in 1739, Wilmington is the 8th largest city in the state, but what makes our city so unique?

“You got the downtown so you got the urban feeling, beautiful beaches, and the river. You also have good restaurants, lots of entertainment, and nightlife. It’s just a cool place,” said Lawler.

Live music, street theaters, and historic tours bring everyone together down on the river walk.

The city has grown rapidly over the last 50 years, but the destination Wilmington has become continues to attract people from all over the world.

Daynen Orr says the possibility here is what inspired her. “The internship possibilities are great as well as the academics and I really enjoy it here on the coast,” Orr said.

This future actress says there is one place she is excited to go, “I haven’t been to Ziggy’s yet for a concert.”

From the historic district to the river walk that winds around the Cape Fear to the beach which draw in so many, there’s just something about the water, or in the water, that keeps calling our town home.

Sosinski said, “Happy Anniversary Wilmington.”
