License plate commemorates Kings Mountain battle

GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina officials have come up with a license plate to commemorate the Battle of Kings Mountain during the American Revolution.

The Gaston Gazette reported the plate was designed by Westmoreland Printers of Shelby.

Cleveland Rep. Tim Moore sponsored the legislation to authorize the plate. The Department of Motor Vehicles must receive 500 applications for the plates by Oct. 31 before they can be printed.

American militia forces attacked British militia on top of the mountain in a battle that delayed British attempts to move into North Carolina in 1780.

The special license plates cost an extra $20.

Moore says if there are not enough applications for the plate by the end of next month, he will try again next year to get lawmakers to authorize the commemorative plate.
