Changes in more than 20 NC laws begin Wednesday

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — New North Carolina laws involving coal ash, specialty license plates and the regulation of alcoholic beverages are being implemented starting in October.

All or portions of more than 20 pieces of legislation approved by the General Assembly take effect beginning Wednesday.

The new coal ash cleanup law now makes it illegal to build new ash pits or expand existing one. It’s also now unlawful to dispose of ash at utility plants that no longer produce ash.

The state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission is being moved from the Department of Commerce to the Department of Public Safety, although the commission still retains independent decision-making authority.

There’s also what lawmakers call a more streamlined way for specialty plates to be approved and produced.
