NC chief justice discusses overturned murder cases

HIGH POINT, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s chief justice says the reversal of two convictions in a Robeson County murder illustrates the dangers of an underfunded criminal justice system.

The High Point Enterprise reported Chief Justice Mark Martin told the High Point Bar Association that he can’t definitively link the overturned convictions to a lack of money for the criminal justice system. But he says the overturned convictions show what can happen because there is not enough money.

In the Robeson County case, two men who served decades behind bars for the rape and murder of a child had their convictions overturned when recently uncovered DNA evidence pinpointed another person as the killer.

Martin said Wednesday the state court system has 6,000 positions and about 600 of those are unfilled.
