Voter scam beware, or not?
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Voter scam beware, or not?
Yesterday we told you the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office was looking into a possible fraud with voter registrations. It may actually be legitimate.
Elections are just around the corner. That is why the board of elections says there are people out and about asking others to register to vote. Janett Farrell says she was approached by a man in the Joann’s parking lot.
“He asked me to fill out a form to get a voter registration card,” Farrell said.
Farrell says he needed her address, phone number, and the last four digits of her social security number.
“You’re looking for personal information, do you have any identification on you? He looked down and said no,” Farrell said.
Farrell says she wanted an ID card, so she filled out the form.
“He said I should get the card in a couple of weeks,” Farrell said.
Then her friend warned her about the scam we reported. Farrell called the board of elections to report it.
“They alerted me that there are people out there that could be from a political party seeking to make sure there are enough people registered to vote,” Farrell said. “Anybody could go out. It could be me. It could be you.”
The board told us there are people that could take advantage of this. To avoid fraud, the board says pay attention to what they are asking. The form does require the last four digits of your social security number, but not the whole thing.
“If it’s legit, fine,” Farrell said. “I think the people going out there should have some form of ID, so we know it’s legit when we give the information.”
Farrell says now she just has to wait.
“Hopefully, in two weeks I will have a voter registration card,” Farrell said.
