Area hog farmers taking precautions

Video

Body

Swine flu came from infected pigs and was transmitted to humans. North Carolina is the second largest hog producer in the country. Most of those hog farms are in Bladen, Duplin and Sampson counties. Since the flu outbreak, area farmers have been taking extra precautions.

Smithfield is one hog farm that most of us are familiar with. They released a statement earlier today stating the swine flu is not present in any of their herds or employees.

Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You cannot get swine flu from eating pork or pork products.

The experts all say eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe.

The virus spreads from infected pigs to people, and then people to people, so it’s important to take precautions as you would to prevent any other disease.
