Wilmington artist has work discovered online
From hometown to Hollywood, one local artist has been discovered online. His work to be used as part of a set in a hit TV series.
Etsy.com is an online marketplace for all things handmade. John Golden advertised his artwork on the site and was discovered by the set decorator of ABC’s new series, Cupid.
“It’s been more than my wildest dreams as far as being able to just get my stuff out there and having it well received,” Golden said.
John Golden and his mother own an art shop in downtown Wilmington. John created much of his artwork digitally, using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
He sells his work on a website for artists called Etsy.com where the set director for the new ABC series Cupid came across John’s work.
He bought a few pieces, and now several hang on the walls in the lead character’s apartment.
John said he owes much of his business’ success to having an online presence. “I blog, I Twitter, I do all that stuff. Presence is an important part of it so that you can be found.”
Even though his online business is thriving, John said there is a value to keeping his downtown shop open. “I kind of hate to think of what it would be like for someone who comes every year on their vacation and we’re not here.”
And some people would prefer looking at the artwork in the store rather than online. “I like it because you get a better view of what you’re looking at and the size, you tell more about the size than you can online. I like to see the original and what it looks like,” said shopper Gary Smith.
This isn’t John’s first brush with fame. Some of his work was also is an episode of HBO’s Eastbound and Down.
You can see John’s artwork on Etsy.com or at his shop, the Golden Gallery, on Front Street in downtown Wilmington.
