Body

APEX, N.C. — Two 11-year-old North Carolina students have won $10,000 in a weekend Scrabble championship in Rhode Island.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday that fifth-graders Andy Hoang and Erik Salgado beat the New Jersey team to win the 2009 National School Scrabble Championship.

Scrabble mom Adair Salgado accompanied the boys and said they just hoped for a good showing because the tournament usually is dominated by older students.

The boys play in the Scrabble club at Salem Elementary School in Apex, just south of Raleigh.
