Opt-out policy for school districts that use corporal punishment

Video

Body

The State House of Representatives wants school districts that use corporal punishment to provide an opt-out policy to parents. The legislation cleared the House Monday.

The bill requires school officials to attempt to contact a parent before such punishment is used. Spanking also will not be administered to a student if a parent has asked in writing it not be done.

Fewer than half of the 115 districts allow corporal punishment. Pender County is the only one in our area that allows corporal punishment of students.
