Snakes safe from NHC Animal Control

New Hanover County Animal Control provides a slew of services, mainly for dogs, cats, and anything to do with rabies exposure. But they don’t handle snakes because snakes don’t carry rabies.

This became an issue Tuesday morning in Wilmington when a snake was found right outside one of the Head Start programs in the Creekwood neighborhood.

The Head Start director called NHC Animal Control, but all they could do was refer them to a private animal removal company.

”We had to take it into our hands. One of our staff members was able to kill the snake himself and this was very unexpected seeing a snake hang from the roof,” said Gabriella Singleton of Head Start.

Nobody was hurt and the children never saw the snake.

All snake requests that get called into New Hanover County Animal Control are referred to Wildlife Removal Services, a private company that charges a fee, but plenty of folks with animal emergencies are happy to pay them for their time.
