Judge-elect says she paid her back taxes

Body

It raises eyebrows every time – A public official who hasn’t paid their taxes. That’s why some of our viewers were concerned, when Governor Bev Perdue appointed a local attorney to be the next District Court Judge for Columbus, Bladen and Brunswick Counties.

Sherry Dew Tyler owed the Federal Government about $76,000 in back income taxes, including interest that started accruing back in 2003.

She’s been a law partner of Senator RC Soles for the past 21 years, and is scheduled to be sworn as a judge on Friday. WWAY caught up with her Wednesday as she was leaving the Columbus County Courthouse.

“I had a federal tax lein,” Dew said. “It’s been a matter of public record for a period of time. My plan had been to take care of that. It was the right thing to do before I was being considered as a district court judge.”

Ms. Tyler told us she paid her overdue tax bill in full. The Governor’s office says they were aware of Tyler’s tax issues when she was appointed, and they were told her problems paying them stemmed from a personal matter.
