NEW DETAILS: Victim at homicide victim’s memorial prior to shooting
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are investigating after they say a suspect fired several shots at a man while he was driving, hitting him once in the hand.
Police say around 7 p.m., ShotSpotter picked up several rounds in the 200 block of South 11th Street just before citizens called to report the shots fired there. That’s where officers say they found shell casings and bullet fragments at the scene.
Just minutes later, police say officers got word from hospital police that a 23-year-old man showed up there with a gunshot wound to his hand. Police say NHRMC employees told them the man drove himself to the hospital after another man shot at his vehicle when he was driving away from the area.
Police say the victim told them the suspect followed him to his vehicle before firing shots at him. The victim also told police he was just at a roadside memorial for Sunday’s homicide victim, Hisan Polk. Polk was found dead on the 1500 block of S. 15th Street.
WPD is not releasing information on the victim as the investigation continues. This is the fifth shooting reported in Wilmington since Saturday.
