Cemetery owner: ‘It’s my issue and my fault’

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A local cemetery is finally getting cleaned up after years of complaints of neglect. The cemetery’s owner said it’s his fault the issues took so long to fix.

Earlier this month, the North Carolina Cemetery Commission appointed new management to the Calvary Memorial Cemetery on North 11th Street, following five years of complaints about conditions. Cemetery owner Jack Krupicka said they are now moving forward and fixing the area.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. We’re going to fix it. We’re going to make it look nice, and we’re going to do our best to have this to be a strong business for the community,” Krupicka said. “And it’s my issue and my fault, and we’re going to fix it.”

People like Cynthia Rush, who has several family members buried at the cemetery, said they’ve already noticed a change from what it used to be.

“The grounds were overgrown, and the old flowers were just left, and the trash cans were overflowing,” Rush said. “It makes me feel really good that someone finally cares about the final resting place.”
