Long lines as early voting starts

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — From now until Nov. 1, registered voters can cast their ballot at any early voting site in their county.

It all started this morning. The sun had barely risen as people waited in line to cast their vote.

“It was also important for me to get out here, because I am going to be busy all day Tuesday, Nov. 4,” voter Brendan Brown said.

Voters say the Election Day can cause many hassles.

“There’s a lot of people that what till the last minute,” one voter said.

That can make for crowded polling sites.

“I’m here today in part to avoid long lines,” said another voter.

And not to mention mother nature’s unpredictability.

“The weather can be bad,” a voter said.

So on this sunny day, people headed to the polls to get their ballot in.

“I am really glad to see all these people actually turned out,” a voter said.

The NAACP also turned out to show their support of early voting. The period for early voting was shortened from 17 to 10 days, but counties still have to offer at least the same number of cumulative hours for people to vote.

Even with the shortened time, the NAACP plans to take advantage of the 10-day period.

“We are trying to bring ten people,” Barbra Smith said. “If all of us, each of us, tries to bring ten people a day can, you imagine what it would look like?”

The number of registered voters in New Hanover County are up according to the Board of Elections. Since 2010, about 15,000 more people have registered to vote.

“We are only 191 square miles and second smallest in the state geographically, but registration wise we are about eighth,” New Hanover County Elections Director Marvin McFadyen.
