Accused murderer speaks from jail

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Did Marokus Ballard kill Hisan Polk? That’s a question a jury will decide.

“I’m not guilty of first degree murder,” said Ballard, “I am not.”

From jail Ballard told us little about what happened Sunday night.

“I tripped and stumbled in something that’s going to take a lot to get out of,” Ballard revealed, adding he couldn’t say more without talking to his attorney.

Police say Ballard shot and killed 23 year old Polk in the 1500 block of S. 15th St.

“None of that was supposed to happen,” he said, “Nothing wasn’t even supposed to happen. I should have just stayed home like I was supposed to,” Ballard said.

He didn’t stay home though. Ballard says he had just gone to a concert with Polk’s half-brother the day before. He says he would not have just turned around the next day and killed his brother.

At a news conference Thursday Chief Ralph Evangelous addressed Ballard’s arrest and the 9 shootings that have happened recently. Saying when officers get to a crime scene, in many instances, no one will tell them what happened.

“Our kids are being killed out there and because of our deafening silence these individuals continue to live this lifestyle,” Evangelous said.

As the investigation continues details about what happened are scarce. Ballard contends he’s saving the information he does have for a court of law.

“Do you know who killed him?” I asked. “No I don’t,” Ballard said.
