Resident: Greenway project too close for comfort
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Changing plans for a greenway bike path and fence have folks in one Carolina Beach neighborhood asking what happened.
The Island Greenway Project began in 2007 and the intention was to extend the Carolina Beach Greenway all the way from Snows Cut Trail to Fort Fisher. Part of the path runs along the Sunny Point Military Ocean Terminal buffer zone and right behind the backyards of people in the Carolina Sands neighborhood.
Residents like Dori Schoonmaker said the plans originally presented have now changed. The fence is now going to be lining a path just yards from homes, rather than on the other side of a pond.
“Maybe this isn’t so friendly. Maybe this isn’t so safe. How negatively will this impact our property values? How will this negatively impact our community at large?” Schoonmaker said.
Town Manager Michael Cramer said he and Mayor Dan Wilcox will meet with residents to explain the changes.
“We didn’t take it upon ourselves to go out and tell the public, ‘Hey, this has changed and this is why.'”
Cramer added that unfortunately, the town can’t do much to change it.
“If it were up to the town, we wouldn’t have any sort of fencing there,” Cramer said.
That adds to the frustration of residents like Schoonmaker.
“How is this stretch of barbed wire fencing at all providing security for Sunny Point?” Schoonmaker said.
