Hydroxycut pulled from local shelves

The FDA is recalling a popular diet supplement. Hydroxycut is believed to have caused liver damage, seizures in more than twenty people, and may even be to blame for one person’s death.

Area pharmacies are pulling it off the shelves. Now believed to cause serious liver damage, the FDA said Hydroxycut has to go.

“What it’s supposed to do is decrease appetite, and increase your metabolism. That’s what it is advertised to do,” explained nutritionist Heidi Kaufman.

According to the FDA, adverse affects of this product are rare, but do exist. So far Hydroxycut has been linked to serious illness in 23 people and one death.

Supplements are considered food, which is why they aren’t regulated by the federal government like prescription drugs.

“The supplements that we have come from the same purpose, from food. The whole point of supplementation is that you may not get enough leafy greens, so you’ll take calcium,” said Renee Montague.

Renee Montague is the wellness director at Tidal Creek natural food store. The weight loss supplements she sells are plant and herb based. She said side effects only come from supplements with chemicals in them. “Hudia, which curbs the appetite naturally, often drank as a tea, we have that in a tea form too. So it feels like a food, you are having tea, and curbing your appetite.”

Hydroxycut is advertised as the most powerful fat burner ever, but according to nutritionists, if it looks too good to be true on the bottle, it probably is.
