Many applicants for few summer jobs

There may have been a time where finding good help was hard, but in this job market, there is no shortage of people looking for work.

When summer rolls around, business at Bert’s Surf Shop is almost guaranteed to pick up… along the number of people looking for a summer job.

Applications are piling up and daily a hand full of people continue to fill them out. “Pretty easy process with a lot of applicants, but it is also pretty disheartening to see how many people really need it,” said assistant manager Taylor Ward.

In the restaurant business, especially when you have a prime location next to the beach like The Oceanic, applicants are coming by the dozen. “On a weekly basis, I’d say we probably easily have 25 to 30 people walk in a week. Some days are bigger than others. We definitely have a large pool of qualified people to look through for our employees,” said Adele McMurtrey, general manager at The Oceanic.

To handle the influx of vacationers that many businesses in the service industry are hoping will flock to our area this summer, The Oceanic has to almost triple their staff.

The Dairy Queen on Oleander Drive has also not had a problem finding people who want to work.

“I was going to put the sign out, now hiring. I had an ex-employee come and ask for his job back so that worked out good. I’ve actually got a guy who worked here a few years ago and i hired a highschool student,” said manager Leeanne Buckner.

During summer season, the hotel business typically increases their staff, but with less people traveling and plenty of hotels to choose from, hiring at the Holiday Inn Express off Market St. has slowed.

“There is four or five more hotels about 500 hundred new rooms and we are not seeing it picking up as it normally does so we are very cautious with our hiring,” said John Hepner the GM at the Holiday Inn Express.
