Man sentenced in special deputy US marshal’s death

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Authorities say a Kinston man was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder in the death of a special deputy U.S. marshal.

Lamont Byrd was sentenced Monday in the death of Warren Lewis III, who also was an investigator with the Nash County Sheriff’s Office and was assigned to a federal regional fugitive force.

Lewis was shot three times on June 9, 2011, while searching an apartment house for suspects in the shooting death of a restaurant worker a week earlier. The now 22-year-old Byrd and three juveniles had been charged in the man’s death.

As part of a plea agreement, Byrd also pleaded guilty to murder charges in state court and is awaiting sentencing.
