Final Surprise Squad leads to more unexpected surprises

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The last few months have been a lot of fun as the WWAY Surprise Squad has traveled around the Cape Fear paying bills, buying meals, paying for gas and so much more, thanks to the generosity of Perry’s Emporium. Sometimes, though, even the Surprise Squad gets a surprise.

Last week, the Surprise Squad made its final trip. We went to Southport, where the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Gift Local Card program. We gave away a couple dozen of the gift cards to unsuspecting shoppers, who can use them at several businesses in the area.

As part of kick-off week for the promotion, anyone who bought a gift card was entered into a drawing to win a $100 gift card. Imagine our surprise, when we got a call Monday from the Chamber of Commerce telling us we had won!

Well, the whole idea behind the Surprise Squad was for WWAY to say thank you to our viewers as we celebrate 50 years on the air, so we wanted to make that happen one more time. We asked the Chamber of Commerce to find a group in the area that could use the card to buy what it needs, use as part of a fundraiser or however else they may choose.

Today the Chamber gave the gift card to Waves4K.I.D.S. (pictured above) It’s a non-profit dedicated to providing financial support and essential services to satisfy the unmet needs of children associated with Child Protective Services and foster care in Brunswick County. They plan to use it to supplement their holiday gift program.

We’re so happy we could help, even if indirectly. If we’ve learned anything from the Surprise Squad it’s that it really is better to give than to receive.

Thank you again to all of you who have made us part of your community for the last 50 years. We look forward to many more years together!
