MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Authorities say a 20-year-old North Carolina man died trying to save a pet dog from his parents’ burning house near Lake Norman north of Charlotte.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said the fire broke out Sunday afternoon. The man ran inside to rescue the pet after firefighters arrived.

Firefighters carried the man out of the house and took him to Lake Norman Regional Hospital where he died Sunday night. Authorities say the dog also died.

Officials say the man’s name hasn’t been released.

A neighbor said the man lived with his parents and the house was badly burned.

Officials were looking for the cause of the fire.
