Commissioners revoke franchise of NHC waste company
Two brothers, who were co-owners, were charged with conspiring with a county employee to not pay for all the trash they were dumping at the landfill. George Saunders has pleaded guilty to 12 counts and paid about $70,000 in restitution to the county.
New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield, Jr. said, “What they did was defraud the entire county of over $70,000 and when we’re facing a budget crunch as we are, laying off employees and cutting back government services, to have someone come in and take money off the table, that’s wrong.”
County officials said Superior Waste Services had about sixty commercial customers who will now have to find a new trash hauler.
At Monday night’s meeting, commissioners voted to revoke the franchise of a waste hauler. This morning, Superior Waste Services is no longer in business in New Hanover County.
