Wednesday was day three in the trial against 42-year-old Brian Reavis, the man accused of sexually assaulting and beating a 95-year-old Wilmington woman.

According to testimony from a DNA analyst, all the scientific evidence from the year old crime points to Brian Reavis.

The 42-year old ex-convict sat alert as a DNA analyst from the State Bureau of Investigation told the jury that semen found on the victim directly identified defendant Brian Reavis as her attacker.

The evidence was collected in a rape kit from the victim just hours after the attack.

The elderly victim took the stand on Tuesday; she was not in court for Wednesday’s testimony.

Analyst Courtney Cowan told the jury she was able to compare the DNA from the rape to a previous DNA sample taken from Reavis when he was arrested for robbery back in the 90s.

The attack happened April 12, 2008. Once the rape kit was submitted to the state crime lab, agents matched DNA to Reavis on April 24th. By April 30th, Reavis was arrested at his mother’s house on south Seventh Street in Wilmington.

A follow up DNA test confirmed that Reavis’ DNA, matched the DNA found after the rape.

The lead detective in the case also took the stand Wednesday.

Reavis’ attorney questioned the detective on a separate incident Reavis had with a female neighbor who reported Reavis harassed her and displayed bizarre behavior outside her home for about three months back in 2006.

Reavis’ attorney began calling his witnesses. He will attempt to establish Reavis’ insanity plea and address the defendant’s history of mental illness.
