The new convention center is a step closer to booking it’s first event. The first organization interested in utilizing the convention center checked it out Thursday morning.

Today members of the North Carolina Motor Coach Association paid a visit to Wilmington.

“We come out and take a look at your city, see what you have to offer, and right now, you’re offering a lot,” said Wilnette Morgan of the NC Motor Coach Assoc.

Jim Harris added, “Beautiful views, and it’s certainly going to be an attraction to the area.”

Wilnette Morgan and Jim Harris are members of the North Carolina Motor Coach Association. They’re part of the first group considering booking an event in the near future.

They said, having a destination like Wilmington within driving distance of major North Carolina cities, is a definite plus. “With the economy right now, people are looking for places in their own backyards, and being North Carolina Motor Coach, this is our back yard,” said Harris.

Their organization hosts bus trips across the state. According to Morgan and Harris, Wilmington offers the best of two worlds.

“Well you have beaches here, you have Thalian Hall, you have a beautiful hotel here, and you have the riverfront,” Harris explained.

It’s groups like the North Carolina Motor Coach Association that tourism director Kim Hufham is trying to reach out to. “People like scenic as we’ve said many times in marketing the new convention center, anybody can have a nice building, but not everyone can have that nice river at that building.”

They want the convention center to act as a catalyst to help identify Wilmington as a drive-to destination.

“The location of our convention center is vital to our marketing efforts in bringing people in for that,” Hufham.

Since it’s still early in the game, city officials haven’t put a price tag on booking an event at the convention center; they’re just focused on marketing our area to large businesses and organizations.
