Coupon confusion at KFC
Who doesn’t love a good deal, especially nowadays? When Oprah announced a promotion for KFC earlier this week, people jumped at the chance to print coupons off her website for a free meal. Apparently, KFC did not expect so many people to take advantage of the deal, and now it’s causing some coupon confusion.
“I worked hard all day, got ready to get my free meal at KFC,” said Sonja Avant. “A lady pulled me out of the line and said, ‘Are you here to redeem that today,’ I said, ‘Yes,’ and she said to me, ‘Well we’re passing out rain checks’.”
Many KFC customers are taking a rain check, after showing up with coupon in hand, ready to enjoy a free meal. The coupon is part of an Oprah-endorsed promotion for KFC’s new grilled chicken, offering two pieces of grilled chicken, two sides, and a biscuit.
Apparently, KFC was not expecting so many people to use their coupon at once. The deal has only been going on for two days and according to the coupon, runs until May 19th, but customers are greeted by a sign on the door saying, ‘Due to the overwhelming demand for the free meal they can’t honor the coupon at this time’. KFC President Roger Eaton has a similar message posted on Oprah’s and KFC’s websites.
KFC customer Jay Scott said, “I believe it, it is a pretty popular item, something new, everybody wants to try, so we’ll just use the coupon again next time.”
Others are not too happy. “I heard about the marvelous giveaway, I thought Oprah was giving away some new grilled chicken to advertise for KFC. I came up here and they tell me I can’t have no food,” said Kevin Boone.
“It’s the principle of it. I don’t care about the coupon, I mean you put something out there to go try and everybody’s trying it. You can’t use it,” said Tim Sidbury.
KFC ensures its customers they will eventually get their free meal if they fill out a form and either mail it into the Kentucky headquarters or drop it off at a participating KFC.
