Reavis found guilty

WILMINGTON — A jury of nine women and three men found 42 year-old Brain Reavis guilty of the rape, robbery, and beating of a 95 year-old Wilmington woman.

The jury deliberated for about two hours Friday afternoon to find Reavis, an ex-convict, guilty on charges of first degree rape, robbery, burglary and maiming from the attack that happened in April 2008. Physical evidence found on the elderly victim led police to arrest Reavis. Prosecutors presented that physical evidence this week.

When Reavis’ defense attorney tried to prove Reavis was insane at the time of the attack by presenting records of his long history of mental illness and drug use, prosecutors claimed he knew right from wrong, especially since he served 11 years in prison for three armed robberies in the 90s.

District Attorney Ben David said, “Very pleased with today’s verdict. The community stepped up to support this woman in so many ways, including helping her catch who did this and providing treatment for her and kindness throughout this last year. Today the community provided the ultimate support to her by returning this verdict.”

Paul Verzaal, the lead detective with Wilmington Police, said, “I think the community did the right thing and did their duty to protect Wilmington and our society as a whole. I agree with what was said and I don’t think he should have been let out in the first place, but the fact remains that he was and this crime happened and it’s a shame that it happened. I think justice was served today.”

Reavis was sentenced to a minimum of 88 years in prison and a maximum of 100 years. He won’t be eligible for parole for another 85 years.
