Coast Guard hosts safety demonstrations

Video

Body

Hundreds of people gathered at the Coast Guard Station in Oak Island to learn more about the men and woman who help keep us safe.

Military units, as well as local safety and emergency services, were on hand to teach people about safety.

The educational event also had career information for anyone looking for work in these fields. ”You have to know first of all, how to keep yourself out of trouble. It’s much easier to avoid trouble than to get yourself out of it. But if you do get into a problem, the government has all these facilities and volunteer groups that are willing to come to your aid,” said George Asimos of USCG Auxiliary Operations.

While people were meeting with emergency service workers, they were also able to get their hands on the equipment.

There were several demonstrations as well. People could go through the wreckage of a burnt car, save “Oscar”, the pretend victim-from drowning and even sit in emergency vehicles.

”We’ve set up all terrain vehicles and the exhibit is actually for the children to come out and see what we do at sunny point military ocean terminal,” explained Stephanie Blasingame.

It was free to attend Saturday’s events, but those who attended were encouraged to bring non-perishable food to donate to the North Carolina Food Bank.
