Cape Fear Commutes 2035 gathering input for traffic plan

A series of open houses has begun throughout the region to gather input on the Cape Fear Commutes 2035 traffic plan. The north campus of Cape Fear Community College hosted Monday night’s open house.

The main purpose of the series is to get as much public input as possible. So far, the input has been a bit of a surprise. “Really a number one priority coming out of people is more walkways and more bicycle paths and that kind of surprised us,” said Mike Roberts of Wilmington Metropolitan Planning. “We thought people would be more interested in automotive traffic, but there’s a great deal of interest in the bike paths and the walkways.”

As far as automotive traffic, Roberts said the Skyway Project linking Wilmington with Brunswick County is still not funded, but it is priority number one for the Wilmington metropolitan area and for the state.

The extension of Interstate 140 is partially funded.

The extension of Military Cutoff Road is also a possibility. It is currently listed as a pending project.
