Thanks to their seatbelts, two families walked away from a head-on collision in Wilmington Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses say, a black minivan rolled through a stop sign heading south on Troy Drive and t-boned a black Saturn on Shipyard Boulevard.

Everyone involved in the crash went New Hanover Regional Medical Center, but none of them had life-threatening injuries.

“I’m glad that everybody turned out alright, especially my sister and her babies and whoever the other driver was and I just want all of this to come to an end,” said Lakeitha Smith.

Officer Larry Zettlelmaier said, “People need to be more aware of their driving habits as well as aware of problems with other people’s driving, that is why Wilmington has the highest accident rate in North Carolina for at least six years running.”

Lakeitha Smith’s sister, Tonya, was driving the minivan. She is charged with a stop sign violation and driving with a revoked license.
